C4’s Top 100 Pop Culture Moments: Beige Brigade

Filed under: The Rave — Snedz @ 1:22 pm

Greetings - we popped up on C4 last Monday night - 99 not out and immensely proud. Have a squizz here.

Not everyone enjoyed the beige of course - of course we’ve been saying it was rubbish for years but nobody believes us so Jane Bowron, the salty old Montana-Sunday-Theatre-loving TV critic at the Dominion Post probably won’t have much luck on that front either. Her venting review is here - and our letter to the editor in response has been filed.

We will also consider sending her a lycra suit (with the crotch cut out) as well, so she can at least start to feel some love and stop being so angry.

THE LIST SO FAR

No. 100 - Star Wars: Bros in Space
Temuera Morrison is every Stormtrooper. Crazy!

No. 99 - Beige Brigade
It began when a group of cricket fans made their own beige uniforms. It became so popular the BlackCaps even wore it during a proper match.

No. 98 - Ladies Night
The most successful New Zealand play of all time, it was the biggest play in England for four years running. It was also a strip show.

No. 97 - Bushwackers
Our very own WWF superstars, Luke and Butch were watched by thousands every week.

No. 96 - Visitors to NZ – They Hate Us
People quite often say mean things about New Zealand. In return, we get really annoyed.

No. 95 - Wanganui Computer
We were terrified of computers back in the day. The construction of a giant computer to hold everyone’s personal details terrified the public.

No. 94 - Hero Parade
Gay people celebrate being gay and the rest of the nation applauds.

No. 93 - No. Animals
Our love affair with animals; from sea elephants and sheep to otters and dolphins.

No. 92 - Rocky Horror Picture Show
“Let’s do the time warp agaaaaiiiinnnnnn….”

No. 91 - Huffer T shirt
Orlando Bloom and Chris Martin wore it. They loved New Zealand. We felt proud.

No. 90 - Gliding On
Did we write the Office before Ricky Gervais? Kind of.

No. 89 - Zoe Bell
New Zealand’s most famous stuntwoman started her career on Shortland Street and has gone on to star in her own Quentin Tarantino film.

No. 88 - Goodnight Kiwi
He went to bed in a satellite dish every night. With a cat. It meant telly was over.

No. 87 - Back of the Y
Matt Heath & Chris Stapp love stunts and heavy drinking. Characters such as Randy Campbell, Danny Parker, Dick Johansonson and Spanners Watson (almost) become household names.

No. 86 - PlayschoolIt’s a British born show, but only New Zealand had Manu.

No. 85 - Te Maori Exhibition
New Zealand realises that Maori art is great art. But only after the Americans tell us so.

No. 84 - Tui Billboards
Yeah Right.

No. 83 - BloopersTV bloopers are always funny. And sometimes a little disturbing.

No. 82 - Ingham TwinsThe infamous Ingham Twins stowed away on a Malaysian ship and caused all kinds of trouble. They became so famous someone’s making a movie about them.

Not Toast is on again…25 July 2009, London

Filed under: The Rave — Snedz @ 5:12 pm

That’s right folks - it’s on again this year!

What is it about?
It’s about not costing your average Kiwi or Aussie an absolute fortune to celebrate our fine food, alcohol and superb music.

What does it cost?
Our ticket cost is a credit crunch busting £0. In fact there are no tickets, just turn up! The aim is to celebrate NZ/Aus wine, food and music, so ideally please only bring the appropriate wine & food. If you opt out and bring foreign stuff we are not going to lose sleep over it – you will just be bad antipodeans! Oh, and don’t forget your BBQ. Feel free to bring your MP3 player and speakers to play some choice songs. Also please bring rubbish bags for all the empty bottles and litter etc… tidy notToasters and all that.
There will not be a dress code – Jandals and Stubbies are encouraged…. Less is more, although not quite as little as one punter last year – you know who you are.

Where is it?
The same place as last year. In sunny Regents Park, somewhere near the cricket pavilion where there are a few trees for shade (wishful thinking for a hot sunny day) and there are public toilets in the cricket pavilion. Click here for a map.

When is it?
Saturday 25th July 2009
2:00pm till dusk. There will be the odd game of touch footy, maybe an innings or two of BYC and a hell of a lot of fun to be had. More importantly, get training for the 3 legged and wheelbarrow races, this year the course has been extended! Sweet As!

Street cricket chaos

Filed under: The Rave — Snedz @ 6:40 pm

Love this - via Will:

“Youtube is extraordinary. Here’s a really clear example of the passion that cricket instils in parts of south Asia, but also the chaotic frenzy it generates. The girl picking up the makeshift stumps, the toddler zooming down the wicket in his trike, the constant shouting, the lack of order and form.”
