Great headline - but for the record Carrie Cox from The Illawarra Mercury is not a card-carrying, paid up member of The Beige Brigade…
Richie was the grumpy old man of cricket, an unlikely symbol of summer. He will be missed, but I’m glad he’s going. Richie Benaud had come to represent for me the Beige Brigade - that stuffy society of set-in-their-ways seniors who think that people lose quality with each generation, and that everything worthwhile has been invented.
The Beige Brigade find young people impertinent, their ideas frivolous. “Long-haired louts” and “brazen hussies” are their favourite phrases. The stolen generation wasn’t an honest mistake; it never occurred.
Richie wasn’t necessarily a card-carrying member of the Beige Brigade, nor are the vast majority of senior citizens, but one did catch a hint of superciliousness in Benaud’s voice, especially when he spoke of modifications to the game, new technology and hot-headed young players.
Make sure you read the deranged comments too. Amongst the very good ones are some bizarre, obscure, abusive, incomprehensible ones. And quite a few are slightly less sophisticated than the commenters on the Sideline Slogger blog.
Richard at Sport Review dot net got a press release from L&P’s PR agency on their hard case cricket tournament.
PR’s easy, it works like this:
Get list of ’sport blogger’ email addresses. For god’s sake don’t bother reading their site to see if they a) do this kind of thing thing or b) hate you
Send out a mass emailed press release
Bloggers do your job for you and send that shit ‘viral’ on the ‘internet’
Unfortunately, sportreview.net.nz’s policy is that L&P needs to eat a bag of dicks for the way they treated top blokes The Beige Brigade last year. Here’s an excerpt from the email the Ad Agency sent The Brigade when they tried to get behind last year’s tournament:
“We kinda see the Beige Brigade as high profile funny guys where as L&P is always the backseat funny guy, finding humour in little kiwi truths and not really making a fuss. We…don’t feel the fit is quite right for L&P, strategically.”
‘Kinda’. That’s awesome. This is how it’s going to go on my site:
Blogger receives mass emailed press release from L&P (disclosure: blogger already thinks L&P should eat bag of dicks)
Blogger responds with snarky mcsnark snark blog post

Mike was asked to contribute to the TV3 article on the ‘Haddin Gate’ and has the shortest vox pop in TV history, 2.3 sec. Blink and miss it here
For more ritualistic abuse of the Australian wicketkeeper, captain and umpire head off to visit the Sideline Slogger’s post on Haddin’s lack of testicular fortitude.
